Jorge’s Journey to Becoming a Chiropractor

My chiropractic story begins back in the early 80’s, I was five years old and living in sunny tropical El Salvador Central America, it was late in the afternoon, the sun was going down and dad had just returned home from work, like always Mum and I had been waiting in the front yard for his bus to arrive, Dad gave Mum a kiss asked how her day was, gave me a hug and went inside, Mum thought that I followed him in, turned around and crossed the road to say hi to our neighbor.

My Accident

I ran after Mum across the road, she heard a car braking heavily turned around and was shocked to see me laying half under the front bumper! The driver had tried to swerve and avoid running me over with no luck. The car had stuck me down with a big impact to my upper spine and skull! Mum rushed to me, I was barely conscious, I was rushed to the local doctor complaining of a serve headache. The diagnosis was that no major damage was done, or so they thought. They sent me home with my first prescription of pain killers at the young age of 5.

Constant Headaches

When I was 10, now living in Sydney Australia, I was now suffering from constant headaches, (that slowly developed into serve migraines) growing pains (? poorly diagnosed by GP), allergies to pretty much everything; cats, dogs, dust, pollen, flour, dairy …the list just went on and on. The worst of all my symptoms were without a doubt the sever migraines! For all you migraine sufferers, you know exactly what I am talking about. For those of you luck people who have never experience a migraine before, let me explain. Imagine your worst headache ever, now multiple that feeling by 100, now you are getting close to understanding what the pain feels like, add some blurred vision, numbness in the fingers, face and teeth, maybe some vomiting and a very strong sensitivity to light. Now you’re experiencing a serve migraine. Oh and did I mention that this could and would last for over 24 hours sometimes, and eventually leave you with a dull headache that would last for days, weeks, or even worse until your next migraine attack!

Doctors Couldn’t Help

By the age of twelve my mother was becoming very concern in regards to my serve migraines and desperately wanted to find out what was causing a 12 year old to be suffering this type of pain. Cancer, Tumors? what? We went through the medical circles searching for answers. The next few months consisted of consultations with local GPs, numerous specialists, different types of X-rays, CT Scans of the spine and brain, blood tests …the list went on and on. All the tests came back normal. The only answer time and time again was medication.

Pain Killers Masked The Symptoms

Drugs to help maintain the pain. We started with Panadol a light drug they called it, after a short while it had no effect at all no matter how many I took, the only thing it was doing is causing stomach problems. So they decided to introduce me to a stronger drug (one used only for adults I found out later). Again the same results, it helped for a while and then my body seemed to get use to it and had no effect whatsoever. So again they prescribed yet another, newer, stronger drug! It was about this stage when I started to question the medical profession, and more specifically their model of health care. It didn’t make sense to me, why would you give someone drugs that did not correct the cause of their problem, all they did was help mask the symptoms and cause serious side effects. All drugs have side effects, and some of these side effects can be worse than the original condition itself! So I decided to look for answers.

Accepting That This Was To Be My Life

By the time I was in year 11 completing my HSC or should I say trying to complete my HSC with this constant headache everyday all day, and crippling migraines every few months or so. It got to a stage when I couldn’t tell if I had a headache or this numb throbbing head was just a “normal” part of life. I had always wanted to become a medical professional for as long as I can remember. The idea of helping people feel, get and stay healthy was very appealing to me. However by this stage I had realised that the medical world does not deal with Health they deal with Drugs and “crisis” care not true health and well being.

First Heard About Chiropractic Care

Midway through year 11 I asked a classmate how her older sister, my old math’s tutor in year 10, was going at university studying medicine. She explained to me how she was now studying chiropractic instead. I had like many of use hardly ever heard of chiropractic before. I had only heard of it once before.

Chiropractor Helped My Brother

As most are aware I come from a very sporty family, while my younger brother Juan was playing football for NSW he injured himself. Thankfully the goalkeeper’s father, Dr Lalani was a chiropractor; he helped Juan get through his injury. That was the first time I was introduced to chiropractic.

Why Not Try This – Certainly Can’t Harm Me?

I decided to learn more about chiropractic and booked myself in for an initial consultation. During this visit he started to explain to me the philosophy behind chiropractic. How the most important system in our body is our nervous system, because it controls every single tissue, cell, organ and muscle in our body. How if your nervous system is not functioning to its full potential, than neither are you.

This made sense to me! He then continued with a full spinal examination, the first time since the accident, 10 years ago that this had ever been performed. Why? As soon as he touched my neck, before I could say that hurts, he said “no wonder you suffer from headaches, when your spine is tender like this it lets me know that you have a misaligned vertebrae affecting the nerves that exit from this area, they are the major nerves that supply the head region hence can give rise to headaches and migraines, lets get some specific spinal x-rays to make sure.”

I was left amazed, finally someone actually did an exam and found what was causing my problems and didn’t just sell me a new drug to trial, to help mask my symptoms!! Needless to say I started care from that day on and have never looked back. Over the first few weeks of care I learned a lot more about chiropractic, its philosophy and importance for true health and wellbeing. The more I learned the more I wanted to become a chiropractor.

I’m Sold

I was in year 12 now and my migraines had improved dramatically, my headaches less serve and frequent, my allergies had also started to show signs of improvement. All these symptoms where coming from my misaligned spine all that time, yet no one had ever even mentioned it as a possibility. Why? I ask?

I have now been under care for well over 10
years and have personally experience and seen through my own patients the miracles, health benefits, and joy chiropractic care can bring to someone’s life. I encourage you to read and talk to other patients about their chiropractic story. You will slowly start to understand that chiropractic is much more than just back pain, we help people with a range of health issues from asthma to colic to sinus to trigeminal neuralgia to name a few. You will learn that a healthy spine will result in a healthy body!

Near Tragedy, Then Being Cured Has Led My To A Wonderful Life Where I Can Help Others.

I truly feel privileged, God has blessed me with so much in life, an amazing family, beautiful wife, gorgeous daughter, and a job/gift where I have the opportunity everyday to help and serve people through Chiropractic, like it helped me so many years ago. I only wish that I had been introduced to chiropractic earlier in life. That’s why I ask and encourage you to share your own chiropractic story with others so they too can experience chiropractic earlier rather than later.
